CNN Article
A girl abducted in 1991 as an 11-year-old has been found alive in California, the El Dorado County sheriff's office said Thursday.

Jaycee Dugard is in good health, the office said in a statement, but provided no details.

Jimmy Lee, a spokesman for the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department, confirmed that a man and a woman have been arrested in connection with the case but could provide no other details. CNN affiliates have reported that Phillip Garrido, 58, and his wife, Nancy Garrido, have been charged.

Phillip Garrido is a registered sex offender and listed on the Department of Justice's Megan's Law page because of a previous forcible rape charge.

An officer at the Contra Costa County Jail in Marinez, California, told CNN that the two had been at the jail and both were ordered held on $1 million bail. The officer said the pair was no longer in the jail but that Phillip Garrido had been booked on charges of kidnapping, rape, lewd behavior, sexual penetration and conspiracy. Nancy Garrido was booked on charges of kidnapping and conspiracy.

Earlier Thursday, Carl Probyn, Dugard's stepfather, told CNN that an FBI agent had called his wife, Terry, on Wednesday afternoon to tell her that Dugard had been found.

The girl was last seen walking to her bus stop in South Lake Tahoe, California, on June 10, 1991, according to the FBI.

At the time, "it was reported that a vehicle occupied by two individuals drove up to Jaycee Dugard and abducted her in view of her stepfather," the El Dorado County sheriff's office said Thursday.

Despite extensive investigations, no sign of her or her possible abductors was ever found, authorities said.

Probyn said Dugard walked into a police station in Northern California earlier Wednesday. He said the FBI agent told his wife that authorities had "Jaycee and the people who she was with."

He said no further details were provided, and that the conversation with the FBI agent was brief.

"It was short and sweet, and 'Can you fly up here?'" he said.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's office has scheduled a news conference for 3 p.m. (6 p.m. ET) to discuss the case.

Probyn said his wife, who is flying Thursday from Southern California to meet with Dugard, spoke to her on Wednesday.

"Jaycee remembers everything," he said. "They talked back and forth and she had the right answers to all my wife's questions."

He said, "I'm feeling great! ... It's like winning the lotto."

Ernie Allen, president of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, said the reappearance of Dugard is "absolutely huge."

"One of the things that we preach to searching families all the time ... is that even in these long-term cases there's hope," he said.

"Even in these long-term cases ... it's important that we not let the world forget."
She was kidnapped when she was 11. Did she try running away? Was she raped is that why the man is being charged with rape?

Jaycee Lee Dugard 1991 age 11

Age Progression 2005 age 25

Sheriff's officials said Thursday they believe a woman who walked into a police station had been kidnapped as an 11-year-old in 1991 outside her South Lake Tahoe home. Two people were arrested on suspicion of kidnapping.

The woman came into a San Francisco Bay area police station and said she was Jaycee Lee Dugard, a blond, ponytailed girl when she was abducted as she headed to a school bus stop 18 years ago, said sheriff's Lt. Les Lovell of the El Dorado Sheriff's Department.
"We're 99 percent sure it's her," Lovell said. He said DNA tests were being conducted. The woman was in good health. It was not immediately clear when she had surfaced at the station.
Lovell said Concord police did an investigation after the woman surfaced, and he received a call Wednesday from investigators who had tentatively identified her as Dugard.
Her family has been contacted and they are in the process of arranging a meeting, said Lovell, who was a detective assigned to help investigate the kidnapping in 1991. "We are very confident at this point in time that it is her."

I can't wait to see the "now" pictures of her. I read this a little while ago and have been searching for those, but I can't find any yet. It's more than likely because they are waiting for the DNA tests to confirm it's her. I wonder if I myspace/FB her she will pop up. lol

I'm looking forward to seeing the "now" photos too, I've always wondered how accurate the age progression images are.

I understand why Dad would be so happy--to learn that his daughter is alive--but I'm not sure I'd describe it as winning the lotto. Considering what Phillip Garrido is being charged with, I'm not thinking the years she's been missing have been the sort that result in stable, well-balanced adults.

I just read this story on MSN.
They report that the pedo fathered two kids by her and that she was held as a virtual sex slave prisoner. That none of the three, ever saw a doctor or went to school.
Being a Mom, I'd want my child back, whatever the circumstances. And, I'm happy they found their child alive. She will defiantly need years and years of therapy.

BTW, the police always suspected the girls 'father' for the disappearance (which broke up his marriage). He's lived with the cloud over his head all these years...do you blame him for being so elated, just by that alone? Much less his child coming home after all these years?

I think I am sort of confused....she showed up at the police station with the man and his wife (aka the kidnappers)? They just turned themselves in after 18 years? WHY?? Am I missing something?

It seems on a parole visit, his parole officer saw Dugard? hmmm, now the article says that he was arrested, cause he was acting suspicious around other children, and during that questioning, he admitted to taking Dugard

The case broke after Garrido was spotted Tuesday with two children as he tried to enter the University of California, Berkeley, campus to hand out religious literature. Officers said he was acting suspiciously toward the children. They questioned him and did a background check, determined that he was a parolee and informed his parole officer.

Garrido was ordered to appear for a parole meeting and arrived Wednesday with Dugard, who identified herself as "Allissa," his wife, and two children. During questioning, corrections officials said he admitted to kidnapping Dugard.

quite crazy, maybe his guilt got to him...and an 11 and 15 year, who have never been to school, imagine what it will be like if they start going now.

He took 4 polygraph tests over the years and remained a suspect (or a more fashionable 'person of interest') until she turned up this week - I wonder if that says anything about polygraphs -

Phillip & Nancy Garrido

Authorities said Phillip Garrido, a registered sex offender, and his wife, Nancy, kept Jaycee Lee Dugard in a ramshackle warren of sheds, tents and tarps behind a fence in the backyard of a home in Antioch, northeast of Oakland.
a blog called Voices Revealed registered to the 58-year-old Garrido, says God has given him the ability "to speak in the tongue of angels in order to provide a wake-up call that will in time include the salvation of the entire world."

The twisted kidnapping case of a woman held captive for 18 years in a secluded backyard compound took another disturbing turn Friday as authorities searched the home of her alleged captor for evidence in the murders of several prostitutes and new evidence surfaced of missed opportunities to arrest him years ago.

He had strong rape desires/fantasies.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32639582/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/

The man accused of abducting and sexually abusing Jaycee Lee Dugard testified during a previous kidnapping and rape case that he prowled through residential neighborhoods as a Peeping Tom and had strong rape desires.

During his 1977 kidnapping trial, Phillip Garrido also said he leered at girls as young as seven and 10, and he admitted to exposing himself to some of them.

He testified that LSD and cocaine acted as sexual stimulants, and that he frequently masturbated and often in public places including the "side of schools, grammar schools and high schools, in my own car while I was watching young females."

gross...and more at the link..

I think that both Garrido and his wife should be thrown into general population of the men's prison, naked, after being tattooed on their upper backs. His should read, "I'm a bitch, and so's my wife." Hers should read "I'm a bitch, and so's my husband." They should have an arrow tattooed beneath that, pointing down, with the words "this is for you guys". That still won't even come close to justice for Dugard and her daughters, but it would be a damn fine start. Evil or Very Mad

If you came to DD after Angel left, I imagine you now see why she was so loved. Only Angel could express her outrage without it seeming like it was the 4,246,036th time that some said an offender should have his dick cut off--she's always so creative in her imagined punishments! Mare she has 2 children by him, I believe they are 11 and 15, she's 29 so I believe that would make her a minor when the first was born.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/09/01/california.garrido.monitoring/index.html
Phillip Garrido was registered as a sex offender, required to meet with parole officers and fitted with an ankle bracelet to track his movements -- but nothing prevented him from being around children, according to a victim's advocacy group.

Phillip Garrido, a registered sex offender, was arraigned in California on Friday.

Garrido, who is charged with kidnapping and raping Jaycee Lee Dugard -- a young woman police say lived with her two daughters in a huddle of tents and outbuildings hidden behind Garrido's home - was arrested last week along with his wife Nancy. Both have pleaded not guilty.

Dugard grew up in the compound and raised the girls, now 11 and 15, that she bore and Garrido fathered, police said. Dugard was abducted in 1991 at age 11.

"Here we have a guy who is essentially under every kind of supervision we allow. Law enforcement had every tool available to them, and [the tools] failed," said Robert Coombs, spokesman for the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault.

Garrido "was technically allowed to be around minors," Coombs said, because his parole stemmed from the November 1976 rape of Katie Callaway Hall, who was 25 at the time of the assault.

He was sentenced in 1977 to 50 years at the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas, for kidnapping because he abducted Hall in California and transported her across the state line to Reno, Nevada, where he raped her in a warehouse, according to court documents. A Nevada court separately sentenced him to five years to life for the rape conviction, the Reno-Gazette Journal reported.

While in prison in 1978, Garrido sent a handwritten letter to Judge Bruce R. Thompson, saying he was recovering from seven years of LSD use and progressing well.

"I am so ashamed of my past. But my future is now in controle [sic]," he wrote.

Court documents show Garrido requested that his 50-year sentence be reduced to 25, making him eligible for parole in eight years, "where he could be released to the state of Nevada as an educated person and being a rehabilitated person."

According to a 1978 court transcript, attorney Willard Van Hazel Jr. told a judge, "Without the influence of any of this drug involvement, I think Mr. Garrido would pause before carrying out sexual fantasies."
...

Each dollar spent on GPS equipment "is one dollar you're not spending on real, traditional parole techniques, like talking to collateral contacts and neighbors," he said.Had Garrido's parole officer spoken to the neighbor who made the 911 call in 2006, authorities might have found Dugard three years earlier, Coombs said.

"We know where this guy is, so we think we're safe," he said, "but the place where we knew he was was the place where he was offending. GPS just tells you where they are. It doesn't tell you what they're doing."

I'm interested to know why the neighbor called 911, has anyone seen anything on it?

The man they called "daddy" turns out to be a registered sex offender thrown in jail, and now they've been told the woman they thought was their big sister is really their mother.

This is what Angel, 11, and Starlit, 15, have faced since the arrest last week of Phillip Garrido, charged with the 1991 abduction of Jaycee Dugard, now 29.

"They thought Jaycee was their sister," Dugard's stepfather, Carl Probyn, tells PEOPLE. "People have to realize this will take years of therapy."

Still, there have been encouraging signs the healing has begun. Dugard's reunion with her mother, Terry Probyn, has been "the happiest time of her life, and they are bonding," says Carl, who split with his wife amid the stress of his stepdaughter's kidnapping (Carl was briefly treated as a suspect, then cleared).

Carl Probyn says what the girls and Jaycee need now is to avoid the media. To that end, they're not only turning down interviews and TV shows, he says, but they're not returning with Terry to Riverside, Calif., because the family doesn't want the girls to be seen by paparazzi.

Before Jaycee was even born, it was Katie Hall who was kidnapped and raped by Phillip Garrido, the same man accused in Jaycee's abduction and 18-year long imprisonment.

When the news of Jaycee Dugard's ordeal became public and the name and face of Jaycee's alleged abductor appeared, Hall's reaction was intense.
"I started screaming 'Oh my God! Oh my God!," she told "Good Morning America" today. "That's who did it, that's who kidnapped me."
Hall had been picking up food for an evening with her boyfriend in 1976 when Garrido approached her in the parking lot, telling her that his car had broken down and asking for a ride home.
Hall obliged, but when she pulled over to let Garrido out of the car he attacked.
...
She was taken to a warehouse storage shed that was outfitted with rugs hanging from the ceiling, pornography, sex toys and a mattress.
"He roughed me up, but I pretty much blocked out all the rape," she said, adding that she found Garrido to be "crazy," talking about his fantasies of Roman times when the men controlled the women.
Hall said she was raped repeatedly over the next several hours before a police officer saw her car and came to investigate the broken lock on the shed.
While the officer questioned Garrido, Hall burst out of the shed, naked and terrified. Hall said now that she believes Garrido would have killed her if she hadn't escaped.
"He had intended to keep someone there," she said of the shed he had so carefully arranged.
Garrido's first wife, Christine Murphy told Inside Edition, that his conviction in Hall's rape was her chance to get out of the marriage to the man she had come to fear.
Murphy, who said Garrido dug a safety pin into her face and threw her into a car when she tried to flee, called her ex "a monster."

I'd be willing to bet that he did. After all, Jaycee was only 11 herself when Garrido kidnapped her. Obviously he likes them young, and Jaycee is 29 now. Probably too old for his liking. You also need to consider that since he never took Jaycee to a doctor, then she was probably not on birth control. She had her first child at age 14, and her second at 18. None after that. Why would that be, if he was still raping her? She was in the prime of her childbearing years, and if she was still having unprotected sex on a regular basis, then odds are that she would have had more kids. The fact that she didn't leads me to believe that he lost interest in her when she got 'too old'. The only younger girls to turn to would have been HER daughters. I'm just surprised that neither of them have any children by him. I certainly hope that he gets all that he deserves in prison....and then some. Sick SOB.

This proves three things:
1. That what I have said for years is, and always will be, true. You cannot rehabilitate a rapist or a child molester. There is something inside them that is broken. It is not a 'sickness' that you can cure, like strep throat or the flu. I don't give a purple piss WHAT the experts say. The only cure for the problem these degenerates have is the administration of high velocity lead poisoning. I prefer a Glock, loaded with hollow points, myself. Twisted Evil
2. Drugs don't cause such behavior, and the absence of drugs will not prevent it in a person so inclined. If that were the case, then simple logic would suggest that ONLY drug users molest and rape, and also that ALL drug users molest and rape. Which we all know is simply not true.
3. Regardless of their intelligence or academic achievement, attorneys and judges are frequently fooled by sociopaths. As happened in this case. Although I believe that in some cases it is not a matter of the authorities being fooled, as much as it is a matter of willful stupidity. I actually believe that the cases of willful stupidity vastly outnumber the cases of unwitting deception, which is why our country is in the state it's in. We are letting the inmates run the asylum, so to speak. Shocked

Thanks for all the updates. I was curious about Jaycee's daughters. I had similar thoughts on whether or not they were molested too. I'm sure they most likely were. Why wouldn't they know Jaycee was their mother?
Anyway, this is probably my biggest nightmare and fear as a parent, that my child would be abducted and kept for years...

I hope that Jaycee and her daughters full recover from the nightmare that was and live happy full lives. Also, that the pedo. and his 'wife' get ALL the karma they deserve, in this life and all the others to follow...

You're giving them the benefit of a doubt. I won't. I think most are just looking at the 'won - lost' column and are willing to do anything for a win. After all, a win = prestige and increased fees.

Their job is *supposed* to be to act as officers of the court and ensure that a person's rights are preserved while providing a vigorous defense.

This does not include getting a client that is clearly guilty off the hook by any and all means.
